Child Sponsorship

Please note, this section will shortly be re-developed

You can sponsor a child (or multiple children) directly with the Project office in Addis Ababa.  For more details on the arrangements, simply email the office here.  Alternatively, UK-based individual supporters may find it simpler and more convenient to join our sponsorship scheme - details of which are here.

A full breakdown of costs is shown below.

A letter from the Project Coordinator

"To  ALL DONORS,

IHA-UDP has been running Child Sponsorship programme for over a decade now to reduce illiteracy by enabling children from the poorest of the poor community get access to education in particular and to alleviate poverty in general. Your contribution in sponsoring a child/children is also highly essential in preventing streetizm and delinquency. Thanks to all of you who enable us to sponsor approx 1,600 children through the sponsorship programme, as the result of which a number of students have successfully joined the university and other higher learning institutions, and some are employed and are helping their families. The problem of streetizm and delinquency are almost illiminated with opportunities to access to education and by setting up the various youth and children activities (since the beneficiaries are the poorest of the poor)

As you know, Ethiopia has changed its education policy regarding high school completion from 12th grade to 10th grade. At the end of 10th grade, a child is expected to take the National Examination and divided into 2 streams. If the exam result qualifies the child to join the 2 year preparatory class, s/he will continue attending grades 11 and 12 at the end of which, s/he will sit for the School Leaving Examination. Those who pass will join the university for a degree programme. If the child at the end of grade 10 passes only for vocational school, s/he will join a 3-year vocational diploma course.

This change of policy coupled with the current soaring cost of living and high inflation rate that is manifesting in Ethiopia, especially in Addis Abeba, has made life more difficult for the poor, and all these factors have direct implications on school fees, food items, educational materials, etc. As a result, it has become nearly impossible for the Project to cover expenses with the current sponsorship fee. IHA-UDP has been trying to accommodate the rising cost of living for the last 3 or 4 years without increasing sponsorship fee. But now the situation has gone beyond its control and has found it very difficult to achieve its set goal with the original fee (i.e. Birr 1000 per annum).

Therefore, taking all these factors on board, IHA-UDP is obliged to make some realistic cost adjustments by increasing the annual sponsorship fee from the coming academic year (i.e. from 2007/2008) onwards as follows::

1.KG up to 10th grade . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . Eth. Birr 1475
2.After 10th grade:
2.1For those who will join 2 years preparatory classes Eth. Birr1,593
2.2For those joining the 3 years vocational
classes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Eth. Birr 1,755

We realize that the above changes of figures are quite substantial and that they will somehow have a significant impact on the budgets of many sponsors. However, as already explained above, it is an unavoidable situation which is beyond our control. Therefore, on behalf of the poor communities we work with and specifically the sponsored children and their parents, we would like to request each and every one of you to contribute whatever is affordable to you to enable us meet the objectives of continuing the sponsorship for our poorest children who have been supported by you through the sponsorship programme.

Please find enclosed herewith the revised breakdown of the sponsorship fee.

Thanking you for your continued interest and sustained support.

With warmest regards,
Jember Teferra (Dr)
Founder, Project Coordinator & Fund Raiser

Encl: Breakdown of the sponsorship/child fee.

Note:
Please refer to your appropriate age/grade sponsored children regarding the annual sponsorship expenses.
As I usually explained to most of you, those who have given more as well as when there is better currency exchange rate the extra fund has been utilized to cover some costs for those who still do not have committed one to one sponsors. i.e. some 3-4 hundred children approximately.
