Why sponsor a child?
The Child Sponsorship programme was
developed to overcome two major barriers to achieving their dream of
giving every child the chance to be educated:
-
25% of the children were not able to go
to school at any stage as their parents could not afford the fees
(there is no free schooling as we have in the UK);
-
of those who were lucky enough to start
at school, the drop-out numbers in the 2nd term were very high due to
the parents being unable to keep up with the payment of the fees.
The situation of so many children unable
to go to school contributed to many of the social problems in the area
such as child labour, prostitution and so on.
The community decide which children are
most in need of the support which the sponsorship scheme provides.
As well as being able to attend school, some children are eligible for
their uniforms and meals to be provided through the scheme.
The scheme is successful - many
sponsored children have gone on to university or other forms of higher
education.
