Broken Heart for Ethiopia
by Gill Wyatt
“Leave me, leave me, get out of my head”
Every time I lay on my bed
I see the faces that nothing erases;
darkness embraces me,
haunting me, taunting me.
In the night, I long for the light
to help me lose sight
of the suffering and pain
and as day breaks again
I fall to my knees,
and I beg you Lord please
Will you ease their sorrow?
But I know I’ll be here once more tomorrow
and tomorrow’s tomorrow
until I can see,
that He’s given the task to you and to me,
to play just that part
that he’s shown us to do.
It could be our money; it could be our prayer,
or perhaps for a while He wants us there,
but surely, oh surely we can’t walk by
And pretend that we just didn’t see;
for Jesus will say
“Inasmuch as you failed to do it for them
you failed to do it for me.”

Reflections on the slums of Addis
Ababa 2008
by Gill Wyatt
My heart is broken and I want to weep;
my soul is stirred yet all I feel is numb,
I go to bed and yet I cannot sleep.
I’m longing for the dawn of day to come,
for stricken conscience pales when night is past.
How would I feel if my home was a slum?
If in the pecking order I was last?
And you, and I, aren’t all of us to blame?
Before their birth the evil die was cast
condemning them to poverty and pain.
They have no power or strength to plead their cause
as justice kicks them in the teeth again.
They have no rights; they do not make the laws
that govern them, and keep them in this plight.
Their families are just like mine or yours;
they’re people, and they surely have the right
to food, to clothing or to have a say.
And will we turn our faces to the night
while hunger is increasing every day?
As prices rise the poor get poorer yet.
How many more will have to fade away
before we understand, before we get
the fact that in our greed we feed their need.
And can we stand by; can we really let
a million souls just die when with one deed
their hunger can be crushed and each child fed
and all it takes is governments to heed
the message, that unless these words are read
a million hungry children will be dead.
