Books appeal
Help us fill the
shelves at the Institute for Urban Workers!
The Institute is a
study and research centre set up by IHA-UDP - both to train
community workers, and to help others study the Project's
approach. But the problem is that its library needs books!
Above: empty shelves in the
library
Following a visit to The Institute
for Urban Workers in June 2008, a team from Glenfall Church in
Cheltenham have committed to filling the shelves of the library at
the Institute, and we need your help to make this happen!
The Institute of Urban Workers is a unique training centre, and
the only one of its kind in Africa. Its mission is to train
workers to help in some of the worst areas of poverty found
anywhere, by equipping them to make a difference. Based on the
model of IHA-UDP in Addis Ababa, the Institute offers courses
leading to Diploma level, and now wishes to offer a Masters degree
course in conjunction with the University of Addis Ababa.
The problem? Books.
In order for the course to start,
the Institute must have a library worthy of the course to act as a
resource for study and training. Currently the centre, which is
funded largely through voluntary donations from abroad, is still
desperately short of books. Textbooks of this type tend to be
printed in short runs, and are expensive. Without a full library,
the centre is not permitted by the government to start the course.
No books - no course!
How to help:
As the costs of the books vary
widely, we suggest donations of £15 (or $15, or €15) per "book".
Sponsors of ten or more books will
be recorded on a commemorative scroll to be placed on the wall of
the library in Addis Ababa.
But books are not aid are they?
Without training, there are no workers to go alongside the poor
and make a difference. Training requires the right resources.
The textbooks for study will not in
themselves make clean water, or repair damaged homes, or teach
basic hygiene, but they are needed to give the workers the
knowledge they need to make a real difference. So, textbooks may
not be exciting, but they are a lasting legacy that can help
generations change.
We have committed to funding the
purchase of the textbooks needed to get a Masters course going at
IUW. We believe that without this kind of education, poverty will
continue to blight Africa for generations to come.
Will you help us?
The concept is simple!
Simply sign up to contribute towards
a book - or more if you can. The Institute needs three hundred
core textbooks to get the course running. With textbooks
costing up to fifty pounds each new, we are also looking to obtain
good quality second hand books - and in some cases, the books
needed are out of print, and so second hand versions are all that
is available.
The project needs to raise the money for the books, and pay for
shipping costs to the centre. Any additional funds raised will be
used to fund additional book needs in the future, and further
resources the library may need.
