The 'Bottom-Up' approach

IHA-UDP is known by some pupils as the MAD Project...

WHY? - because the way it is run has turned all usual methods of development upside down. Most projects have leaders who have pre-determined ideas of exactly what is to be achieved, and how it is to be done.  They therefore direct the project towards those targets.  This is called the TOP-DOWN approach.

This project, however, is the opposite.  It is BOTTOM-UP, allowing those benefiting to decide on what they feel their needs are.  In this case those who are benefiting are amongst the poorest of the poor in Addis Ababa, but they are the ones who are setting the priorities for their community.
