Philosophy and methodology

The basic philosophy of the project is that of enabling the community to determine their own needs by means of a  "Bottom-up approach".  This entails the community within the area being empowered to identify their own felt needs.

To enable this process to happen, clearly defined structures are put in place, which touch every part of the community.

1. Educational Extension Workers - EEWs, play a major part in this.  The other name for them is "Yellow Girls", because they are clearly seen around the community wearing their bright yellow coats.

2. The 'Neighborhood Group' in the community organization structure is a voluntary grassroots group representing the community at a clearly defined structure of different levels: family / household groups, sub-zone, zone, and Kebele levels.

3. The Youth Association operates on the same level as the neighborhood group, but focuses on specific youth issues.
