Historical background

The Project has gone through several phases, and worked in different areas.  Here is a brief time-line of the work that has been carried out:

  • 1989 - Project commenced as IHA-UDP in Kebeles 30,41,42,43

  • 1997 - December, IHA-UDP phased out, having acquired legal status for its community-based successor, CBISDO (Community-based Integrated Sustainable Development Organization). The work continues and is sustained by a community organization board.

  • 1998 - May, IHA-UDP replicated itself in former Kebele 08 of Woreda 23.

  • 2004 - December, IHA-UDP phased out, again, having acquired legal status for its second community-based successor, AHISDO (Addis Hiwot Integrated Suitable Development Organization). The work continues and is sustained by a community organization board.

  • 2005 - September, IHA-UDP replicated itself again and extended itself from AHISDO area to the next kebele: former Kebele 09 of Woreda 23(which has merged recently and is being known as Keble 08/09 of Kirkos Sub City.)

  • Present day - both CBISDO and AHISDO continue successful operations with the Extension Project reaching a total number of 51,000 beneficiaries.

  • The future - Since most organizations, both secular and Christian, had requested to share experience of the project as a demand responsive action, IHA-UDP has set up the Institute for Urban Workers (IUW) to teach both grass root and professional workers at certificate, diploma and soon Masters degree level.
