In the very heart of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a very special project has been taking place. It is special because it has been supported by people the world over, and yet the needs of the community have been determined by the local people who know the real meaning of abject poverty.

To find out more about this project, including the secret of its remarkable success, please explore this website according to your personal interests and needs.

What is IHA-UDP?

The Integrated Holistic Approach Urban Development Project (IHA-UDP) was launched in June 1989 following detailed research, planning, budget preparation, and signed agreements with government and donors. It began by working in four of the poorest districts (Kebeles 30, 41, 42 and 43) of Addis Ababa with the aim of breaking the vicious circle of poverty and despair which existed in these areas.

In 1997, the first project was handed over to the local community to run under the name 'Community Based Integrated Sustainable Development Organization' (CBISDO) and in 1998 a second, smaller area (former Kebele 08 of Woreda 23) was identified to replicate IHA-UDP’s experience.

In 2004 the project again phased out having handed over to the community to run under the name of 'Addis Hiwot Integrated Sustainability Development Organization' (AHISDO).  In 2005 it extended its project to the next sub district, former Kebele 09 of Woreda 23.

In order to share experiences IHA-UDP has also opened the Institute for Urban Workers (IUW) which was inaugurated in 2004. Courses are given at three different levels: Certificate, Diploma and in the future, Masters Degree.
