Programme Summaries
under the three Major
Components of the IHA-UDP Project
The three major components under which the eleven prioritized needs
are categorized and organized are as follows:
Physical Up-Grading:
Since deterioration of the environment is one of the manifestations of
poverty, the physical upgrading of housing and related facilities was
deemed to be an important area of intervention. The component is
concerned with the following
-
Dwelling units deemed to be totally
unfit for human habitation and replacing them with new ones
-
Houses requiring major and minor repair.
-
Latrines needing to be rebuilt
reactivated and/or repaired.
-
Kitchens needing to be rebuilt, and
repaired.
-
Buildings related to programme
activities, roads, alleys, ditches and lanes.
-
Rents are collected from each resident,
whose residence has been rebuilt and placed in a special account. The
cost is, at least in part, covered by funds from this account over a
period of time.
Socio-economic Improvement (Community
Development)
The social and economic component of the project is aimed at creating
social awareness and dealing with human problems such as employment ,
income and the general question of livelihood.
-
Creating social awareness and dealing
with human development issues resulting in empowerment, recovery of
self-dignity, respect and self-sufficiency
-
Community organization at grassroots
level from Kebele to zone, neighbourhood and household groups.
-
Income generation and job creation.
-
Education: both primary and vocational.
-
Correction and rehabilitation training
as well as addressing needs and issues related to both the socially
and physically disadvantaged.
Health
-
Preventive: Primary Health Care and its
8 components: health education, mother and child health, nutrition,
safe and clean water, immunization, environmental health, control of
communicable diseases and minor treatment (First Aid)
-
Curative: clinic based activities
In the IHA-UDP philosophy all these
disciplines come together to address the root causes of poverty.
