Introduction
“Entering the World of Poverty: Handbook for Poverty Alleviation” is
the title of this thesis. Accordingly, this academic exercise aims at
identifying and documenting the factors that necessitated the adoption
of the Integrated Holistic Approach Ministry in order to tackle the
immense problem faced by the poorest communities in Addis Abeba, Zone
1, Woreda 3, Kebeles 30, 41, 42 and 43. It also aims at increasing the
understanding of the concept of the Integrated Holistic Approach by
extensively reviewing past and recent available literature to
substantiate the viability of the approach which has already been
replicated in Addis Abeba, Zone 2, Woreda 23 Kebele 08.
The other purpose of the academic exercise or documentation is to
share experiences so as to be useful as a reference material, although
not as a prescriptive, operation manual. It is hoped that those who
may ask IHA-UDP to assist in setting up ministries in the city, this
document and the future Institute of Urban Workers will be of some use
when it is appropriately adapted to the specific needs of the areas of
intervention.
This section of the thesis will primarily discuss the global overview
of poverty (setting the wider context of global poverty issues). It
should be emphasized that any development work documentation can be
replicated when it attempts to think global and act local. Otherwise
it will narrow the sphere of replicability. For that reason this
introductory part of this chapter will give a summary of status of
poverty in three poor regions of the world: Asia, Africa and South
America.
The document will narrow to focus on Addis AbAba, and specifically
articulating present statistical information as to why the type of
intervention IHA-UDP has implemented in Woreda 3 in the city of Addis
Abeba together with the challenges and opportunities encountered. The
case study will focus on the CBISDO, the first IHA-UDP program.
